Sunken Costa Concordia stands upright again — Costa Concordia cruise ship wreck was turned upright on September 17, 2013 off the Italian island of Giglio in the biggest ever salvage operation of a passenger ship, officials said. The largest and most expensive maritime salvage operation in history, so-called “parbuckling”, involved rotating the ship by a series of cables and hydraulic machines. Thirty-two people died when the ship, with 4,200 passengers on board, hit rocks and ran aground off the island of Giglio on January 2012.
